The CREATE Centre at the University of Sydney is a vibrant hub of innovation in research, making creativity and the Arts. To learn more, visit https://www.sydney.edu.au/arts/our-research/centres-institutes-and-groups/create-centre.html.
Research-based Theatre (RbT) is a qualitative, arts-based methodology that invites researchers, artists, educators, and research participants to collectively translate and transform research phenomena into theatre. This approach makes use of applied drama and theatre strategies, and at its core rests on two commitments: a) to honour and ethically explore the research context; and b) engage and commit to the art form of theatre. This session explores key aspects of RbT and the tension amid these dual commitments.
RbT is frequently applied in collaboration with a range of interdisciplinary research groups, such as Health Sciences, Education, Engineering, Nursing, to Social Work – each looking to expand and re-imagine their approaches to knowledge generation and translation. RbT is a living, often messy, and fluid methodology. To provide an entry point into the methodology, in this seminar we share a short scene illustrating RbT in practice. We will then speak to some of the projects we have been involved in with our partners and discuss learnings that emerged in these collaborative partnerships.
